Investigation starts into toxic gas release at Copper Cliff smelter

An investigation is underway into what caused Thursday`s release of toxic gases at the Vale smelter in Copper Cliff.  Company officials say nitrogen dioxide and nitrogen oxide should not have been able to escape from the plant.

When combined, the gases can cause respiratory problems and can kill if inhaled in large doses.  Vale sounded an alarm air horn after the release meaning residents were to stay in-doors until further notice.

It turns out the community at large wasn`t in any danger but Vale says it set off the alarm as a precaution.  No one was hurt in the incident.
