Nipissing First Nation closing commercial walleye fishery early

Nipissing First Nation’s commercial walleye fishery is being closed three months early.

After several community consultations, and a recommendation from the fishery’s staff, council decided it would be best to shut it down to help with conservation efforts. The closure comes into effect on August 22nd, and will last until the end of the 2016 Spring Fisheries moratorium.

Chief Scott McLeod says he is actively working on plans to offset the economic impacts of the decision, and has notified fishers of the closure.
