Health unit to build new facility

The North Bay – Parry Sound District Health Unit hopes to be in a new building in North Bay by spring 2017.  Doctor Jim Chirico, the unit’s medical officer of health, says the location is at Oaks and Cassells beside Marina Point.

Chirico says the health unit will be the mortgagee and make the monthly payments through its operations budget.  Right now the unit rents three spaces in North Bay.

Chirico says by switching the lease payments to mortgage payments, there’s no levy increase to the 31 municipalities under the health unit.   The cost of the two-storey building is designed not to exceed $20-million.

The health unit needs to move because it’s outgrown its present sites.  North Bay city council is endorsing the move unanimously.  Tenders on the project go out next month.

The health unit employs 150 people in North Bay.  The North Bay relocation will not affect services or job numbers in Parry Sound and Burks Falls.
