Town hall for taxi bylaw slated for next week

A virtual town hall discussing the new proposed taxi bylaw will be held by the North Bay Police Service.

Amendments to the city’s Vehicles for Hire and Private Transportation Company Vehicles By-Law was deferred to the Police Services Board last June. The proposed amendments are meant to consider ridesharing and private taxi companies and how they are to be regulated in the city.

The Police Services Board has been responsible for taxi licensing in the city since 1997.

A draft of the amended bylaw was completed in January and made public in August. The amendments now include caveats for ridesharing platforms which include insurance, safety and financial requirements needed to start operating in North Bay.

“The By-Law has been designed to help ensure the health and safety of both passengers and drivers. It focuses on consumer protection and the protection of property while at the same time offers additional safe options for travelling within North Bay,” the Police Service said in a statement.

The virtual town hall will take place over Zoom on October 13 at 10:00 am.
