Transit system to get provincial funding for enhanced cleaning

North Bay city council will have the chance to approve over $37,000 of provincial funding to help in enhanced cleaning of city buses.

The Government of Ontario is providing up to $15 million to 110 municipalities to enhance the cleaning measures for public transit. The funding is calculated using the same data to determine the 2019-20 Gas Tax Funding.

North Bay will be receiving $37,477, which will cover the costs of transit cleaning from April 1 to the end of the year.

“Eligible costs will include items considered to have been properly and reasonably incurred and are necessary for the enhanced cleaning of transit vehicles and any other public and non-public facing transit assets that provide or support transit services,” city staff report states.

The city’s transit system has modified its service throughout the pandemic, providing a reduced number of routes early in the pandemic and throughout the summer. Starting Tuesday, more routes have been added in response to increased ridership.

City council is being recommended to approve the transferring of funds for the enhanced cleaning measures at Tuesday evening’s meeting
