Break and enter stopped by homeowner

One person has been arrested after a break and enter into a North Bay home was stopped by a homeowner.

North Bay police responded to the call early Wednesday morning at a home on King Street West. Police say that a suspect had broken into a locked shed on the property.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found that the homeowner had subdued the suspect after noticing his shed had been broken into.

Constable John Schultz says the man wrestled the suspect and pinned him to the ground while he waited for police to arrive.

“As a property owner, you can use as much force as necessary to protect your property,” Schultz said on the homeowner’s intervention.

Schultz adds that police recommend getting a description of the suspect if a crime is being witnessed, but says he understands why the homeowner intervened.

The property owner suffered minor injuries, with no medical attention needed.

As a result of the incident, a 29-year-old North Bay man has been charged with:

  • One count of Trespass by Night;
  • One count of Break and Enter with Intent;
  • One count of Assault;
  • One Count of Possession of Break-In Tools; and
  • One Count of Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance

The man remains in custody and is awaiting a bail hearing.
