Trout Lake Road construction project approved by council

Trout Lake Road between Mountainview Drive and Lees Road will be receiving some much-needed construction.

City council approved $175,000 that will go toward a project to fix the 1.6 km section of road while adding bicycle lanes and addressing drainage issues that cause the area to become icy in the winter.

The city successfully applied to the Connecting Links Program which will cover 90 percent of the cost of the construction. The overall cost will be $3.5 million with the city receiving up to $3 million to cover expenses.

“Taxpayers need to realize how big of a contribution the province has made here,” said Councillor Mark King during the discussion of the motion.

That provincial help is a large reason why the work to the area is being done. Councillor Tanya Vrebosch says she has received numerous calls about the drainage and subsequent icing in the area for a number of years but says the city has not had the money to do it until now.

The work to Trout Lake Road will be an extension of the construction done from Giroux Street to Mountainview Drive in 2018, which involved the rehabilitation of the bridge in that area.

The work to the area is expected to begin in either late 2021 or in 2022.
