Cassells street to reopen next week

Cassells street will reopen after eight months of being closed for construction.

The City of North Bay says that the area will reopen at the end of next week following the paving of Cassells between Chippewa and King streets.

Shaw street (behind the Food Basics plaza) will still be getting work done into December and beginning again in the spring.

The Cassells street reconstruction began in July of 2019 which aimed to replace the City’s underground infrastructure and reconstruct the road. It will include four travel lanes between King and Olive streets, five travel lanes between Olive Street and Highway 11/17, along with various turn lanes and access upgrades, as well as sidewalks, curbs and gutters on both sides.

The project also includes the replacement of traffic signals at Chippewa and Olive streets, reconstruction of Shaw Street and improvements to the Victoria Street intersection.

The Cassells street bridge has also been replaced, including rehabilitation of Chippewa Creek on both sides of the new structure.

The total cost of the project is $10.9 million.

City officials say the project was originally slated for completion this year, but as a result of a pause in the project earlier this year due to the pandemic some works will now be finished off in 2021.
