COVID-19 outbreak declared at Nipissing University

There has been a COVID-19 outbreak declared at Nipissing University.

The university alongside the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit says six people have tested positive for the virus after spending time at the R.J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre.

Three of the six individuals are confirmed to have been on campus.

The Health Unit says immediate close contacts have been notified. They add if you have attended social gatherings with anyone within the Nipissing University athletic community who tested positive, to self-monitor for symptoms.

A statement from Nipissing University says the gym has been closed for a deep cleaning since November 18 and will reopen with new restrictions in place.

“The health and wellbeing of our students, staff and faculty remains our top priority and we continue to work with the Health Unit to ensure we are taking all of the recommended steps to prevent further spread of COVID-19,” said Cheryl Sutton, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor.

There are now eight active cases of COVID-19 in the Nipissing District, with two in Parry Sound.
