What it would take to leave the “green” zone

As some regions of the province move into the “yellow” zone of Ontario’s COVID-19 tiered prevention plan, the North Bay and area is one of 10 communities still in the “green” zone.

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit remains in the green or “prevent” zone of the provincial framework, which has the fewest number of restrictions.

As of yesterday, the majority of the province is now out of the green zone, including two health units around the Toronto area being put back into lockdown.

The requirements for health units to remain in the green include:

  • Reporting less than 10 cases per 100,000 people per week
  • Less than 0.5 percent of tests come back positive
  • Minimal community outbreaks or evidence of community spread
  • Adequate ICU and hospital capacity
  • Adequate percentage of positive test results given within 24 hours

The Health Unit says it is below the provincial threshold in nearly every requirement to stay in the green. As of November 23, there are:

  • Seven cases per 100,000 people
  • 0.5 percent of tests are positive (at the threshold)
  • One community outbreak (Nipissing University)
  • Stable level of community spread
  • Hospital and ICU capacity remains stable
  • 100 percent of positive cases are notified within 24 hours

The Health Unit says with the recent declaration of a community outbreak, and rising numbers of cases, it’s up to the community to stay in the green zone.

“Now is not the time to be unconcerned,” it states.

They are urging the public to:

  • Assume everyone outside of your home has COVID-19 and take precautions
  • Limit travel outside the home
    • To attending school or work – if unable to work from home;
    • For essential trips for groceries, medication and medical appointments
  • Do not travel out of the district
  • Avoid socializing for now
  • Limit exercise and recreation to outdoor spaces where physical distancing is possible
  • If you have COVID-19 symptoms or feel ill, isolate immediately and arrange to be tested for COVID-19

As of November 24, there have been 67 total cases of COVID-19 in the Health Unit’s region, resulting in one death.
