Three charged in Bonfield, suspected fentanyl and weapons seized

Three locals have been charged with a slew of charges after OPP responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 17.

Police arrived at the crash in Bonfield township shortly before 1 pm on Sunday.

They say their investigation revealed that one of the drivers was impaired.

After searching the vehicle, police say they also found drugs suspected to be fentanyl, nearly $5,000 in cash, as well as prohibited weapons which included two imitation handguns.

The total estimated street value of the seizure is over $70,000.

A 38-year-old North Bay man has been charged with:

Operation While Impaired, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
Possession of Prohibited Device or Ammunition for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC,
Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Opioid, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) (two counts),
Driving While Under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), and
Fail to Yield to Traffic, contrary to section 144(8) of the HTA.

He was issued a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court by video on December 1.

A 32-year-old Bonfield Twp. man was charged with:

Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Opioid, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA (two counts),
Possession of Prohibited Device or Ammunition for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC, and
Failure to Comply with Release Order, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC.

The accused was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in North Bay court on December 3.

A 23-year-old from Mattawa was charged with:

Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Opioid, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA (two counts),
Possession of Prohibited Device or Ammunition for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC (two counts), and
Possession of Imitation Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC.

The accused was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in North Bay court on December 3.
