Police urge caution while driving downtown

Cst. John Schultz, the North Bay Police Service’s community safety officer, says drivers should be careful while driving downtown during the winter months.

“You should drive to your road conditions and that means taking a little more time while driving through our downtown core,” Schultz said.

The intersection of Wyld and Main streets has been the scene of two traffic incidents in a week’s time.

On December 2, a collision at the intersection of Wyld and Main sent a pedestrian to hospital with “minor to medium” injuries.

Less than a week later (December 7), a multiple-vehicle collision at the same intersection sent one person to hospital to get treated for minor injuries. Two vehicles had to be towed from the scene.  Charges are pending for one driver in the incident.

“We have a lot of people downtown,” said Schultz. “There’s now snow on the sidewalks, it makes it more difficult to see.”

Schultz adds that posted speed limits are not necessarily a requirement.

“Just because the speed limit is 50, doesn’t mean you have to drive 50. A safe driver drives to the conditions of the roadway,” he said.
