City gets $250,000 from province

The City of North Bay is getting $250,000 in funding from the provincial government to help offset year-end budget shortfalls brought on by the pandemic.

The money comes from Phase 2 of the provincial government’s Safe Restart Agreement. The first round of funding saw North Bay receive over $4 million in August to be split between municipal costs and transit.

Deputy Mayor Tanya Vrebosch says the city is appreciative of the additional support from the provincial government.

“Even though we were hoping for a little bit more but we’re very pleased to receive the $250,000 today. Every little bit helps,” Vrebosch commented.

All 444 municipalities across Ontario received a share of $299 million that was doled out on a per-capita basis.

An additional $369 million was also dispersed to the 48 hardest-hit municipalities in the province.

Nipissing’s 11 municipalities are receiving a total of $452,000 from the second phase of the Safe Restart Agreement. Aside from East Ferris getting $22,000, the remaining nine all received $20,000.

Vic Fedeli, Nipissing MPP says the funds will allow the municipalities in his riding to continue to deliver essential services.

“Today’s announcement will help the municipalities in Nipissing develop a 2021 budget that reflects the reality of COVID-19 and give them the confidence they need to proceed with capital projects that will drive economic growth,” Fedeli stated.

Tanya Vrebosch says council will have to discuss what to use the money for in North Bay. That discussion will take place during Wednesday evening’s budget talks.
