Reopening dates set for Sunset Park, Algonquin

Sunset Park Public School will reopen on Monday, February 22, with École Secondaire Catholique Algonquin set to reopen March 1.

Sunset Park was directed to close two weeks ago after someone tested positive for COVID-19. While an outbreak was not declared, Dr. Jim Chirico, medical officer of health, directed the school to close out of an abundance of caution.

The Near North District School Board says all surfaces have been “thoroughly” disinfected over the 14-day closure.

The case in Sunset Park coincided with the early stages of the Lancelot Apartment outbreak which infected 33 people, many of which had preliminary results for a variant of concern.

Algonquin was dismissed last Friday after a member had tested positive for COVID-19. The closure was, again, out of an abundance of caution on the part of the Health Unit.

“We recognize that this two-week period can be inconvenient, and we thank you all for your understanding,” wrote Monique Ménard, director of education for Conseil Scolaire Catholique Franco-Nord in a letter to parents. “Your respect for the instructions, your patience and your collaboration are most appreciated.”
