A trio of local recreation projects are getting investments from all three levels of government.
Camp Tillicum Renewal Project
Camp Tillicum will be receiving over $605,000 in funding split between the federal ($242,500) and provincial ($202,063) governments along with Camp Tillicum($121,250; $40,000 from other funding) for the replacement of its community hall with a more accessible facility. Bathrooms will also be updated, along with removing other safety hazards at the camp.
“With this funding from Canada and from Ontario, North Bay Rotary’s Camp Tillicum will be able to start construction on the Redpath Youth Centre, as the centrepiece of a refurbished waterfront recreational facility,” said Bob Cunningham, President of the Camp Tillicum Board.
Snowmobile Trail Upgrades
Local snowmobile trails will be getting some repairs through $327,000 in funding ($131,403 federal; $109,393 provincial; $87,711 from trail associations/snowmobile club).
The Near North Trail Association, North Bay Snowmobile Club and West Nipissing Snowmobile Club are jointly receiving the support to replace two bridges and upgrade three others in the area. New railings, 14 culverts and maintenance equipment will also be purchased.
“This funding will create trail sustainability for years to come, provide a safe and enjoyable experience for ridership while generating significant economic impact in the local communities of the Near North Trail Association District,” commented John Miller, President and Governor of the Near North Trail Association.
Trout Creek Community Centre
In Powassan, the Trout Creek Community Centre will be moving ahead with a project to make the building more accessible.
Over $187,000 ($75,387 federal; $62,809 provincial; $50,258 municipal) is being invested through the three levels of government for an accessible ramp, hands-free hardware and railings, four sets of publicly accessible bleachers for community events, and new accessible playground equipment.
“The rehabilitation of the accessibility ramp at the Trout Creek Community Centre will ensure that our Recreation Center is accessible and utilized to its potential. The accessible playground equipment provides safe and inclusive play opportunities for children. The portable accessible bleachers will encourage participation in events and activities by all community members,” stated Peter McIsaac, Mayor of Powassan.
In total, the federal government is investing $449,281, the provincial government is providing $374,265. North Bay Rotary’s Camp Tillicum Camp Corporation is contributing $121,250, the Near North Trail Association is investing $87,711 and the Municipality of Powassan is providing $50,258 towards their respective projects.
