Sands Motel demolition underway

After a two-year process, the demolition of the Sands Motel is finally underway.

Crews began the work Wednesday which will see sections of McIntyre Street and Fisher Street reduced to one lane.

Bev Hillier, Manager of Planning and Building Services, says the process will take a “couple of weeks”.

“We’ll be maintaining a safe site during the work construction so don’t go on the site while the work is undertaken,” she said, adding there won’t be any other traffic delays.

The city first notified the property owner in 2019 that the building was in violation of property standards. After delays caused by appeals and the pandemic, council approved the  $149,641 contract for the motel’s demolition in March.

It is not yet known what will happen with the property on the corner of McIntyre Street and Fisher Street once demolition is complete as it is still privately owned.
