SIU investigating firing of anti-riot weapon in North Bay

The province’s police watchdog is investigating the discharge of an anti-riot weapon by a police officer in North Bay on Wednesday.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says shortly before 3:00 pm on May 5, OPP and North Bay Police Service officers surrounded a vehicle in the parking lot of a business on Lakeshore Drive.

Inside the vehicle was a 22-year-old male passenger who the SIU says was wanted on multiple warrants.

After the man refused to get out, police discharged the weapon at the vehicle. The SIU says the man then came out and was arrested along with the driver.

According to an SIU report, the man did not sustain any serious injury, but their mandate was invoked because of the discharged firearm.

Anyone who may have information about this investigation is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
