Two area seniors projects get federal support

Two separate projects aimed at serving the area’s seniors have received some funding from the federal government.

The funding comes through the New Horizons Seniors Program which has been accepting applications for community-based projects for seniors.

The YMCA of Northeastern Ontario will be receiving $18,590 for its Digital Inclusion and Seniors Connections Opportunities (DISCO) project. The program helps seniors with their digital literacy and promotes social inclusion.

“Receiving funding from New Horizons means that we are able to collectively make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of seniors in our community,” stated Helen Francis, President and CEO of the YMCA Northeastern Ontario.

Canadore College’s Applied Arts program in West Parry Sound also received $25,000 for its Forest School From the Lens of Seniors Project, which provides seniors with “intergenerational forest education experiences” through social media and other activities.

“Our West Parry Sound campus with its beautiful surroundings is the perfect location to offer this programming. The idea is to bring older adults together and return them to a sense of community that was lost to many people during the pandemic,” said George Burton, President and CEO of Canadore College.

The money comes from Fednor on behalf of the Ministry of Seniors.

“Seniors in North Bay and right across Nipissing-Timiskaming deserve to have a wide range of opportunities to participate in meaningful activities which nurture their personal growth and foster community vitality,” said Anthony Rota, MP for Nipissing-Timiskaming. “These two projects will accomplish that through the funding they receive through the New Horizons for Seniors Program. It is important to give back to our senior population when they have given so much to our communities.”
