OPP watching driver behaviours during Canada Road Safety Week

The focus of Canada Road Safety Week is saving lives.

The annual campaign started on Tuesday and runs through Monday, May 24th.

Northeast Region OPP will once again be watching for the big four driving behaviours that are consistently attributed to collision fatalities.

Those behaviours are aggressive, inattentive/distracted, alcohol/drug-impaired drivers, and unbuckled vehicle occupants.

A/Sgt. Phil Young, Northeast Region OPP, says over 260 people died in collisions in the Northeast between 2011 and 2020.

“Inattentive-related would be 78, speed-related 78, seatbelt-related 61 and drug and alcohol-related or impairment for the Northeast Region would be 48,” he says.

Young says OPP will also have a presence on the waterways this long weekend, ensuring safety there, too.

He reminds both drivers and boat operators that they aren’t only responsible for themselves.

“When they’re in that driver’s seat or in the operator’s helm of a vessel they’re not only affecting their own vessel or vehicle and their passengers in that motorized vehicle or vessel, but they’re affecting everyone else around them who are sharing that waterway or roadway,” Young says.

Safe Boating Awareness Week starts on Saturday.
