New company taking over parking enforcement in North Bay

A change is coming for parking enforcement and security services in North Bay.

Council approved a move last week to bring in a new company.

A staff report says Neptune Security Services scored highest and provides the best overall value to the City.

Deputy Mayor Tanya Vrebosch says there was a difference of $20,000 a year on the five-year contract.

“We’re going to Neptune Security Services for providing the work that the Commissionaires have been doing, which includes the marina or parking, so that’s going to be a change.  There’s going to be an opportunity for the current staff to stay on,” she says.

Councillor Marcus Tignanelli wanted to make sure that current staff are respected in the process.

“While we understand that there’s cost savings to be found, I’m hoping these cost savings are found through the administration levels of these security companies that are receiving the contracts and not simply a matter of rehiring the same Commissionaires we have while cutting their salary,” he says.

The new company takes over August 1st.

Council also approved a parking change involving the West Link Bicycle lanes on Main West.

There will be no parking on both sides of Main Street West between Timmins Street and the intersection of Main West, Memorial Drive and Murray Street.

A staff report says a study initially recommended the removal of the parking lane on only the south side of Main West, but the detailed design determined additional measures would improve the functioning and safety of the bike lanes, including the removal of parking from the north side.

A 2018 parking study “determined that the side streets would have sufficient capacity to take up the volume of parking used on Main Street West.”
