Norman Avenue home heavily damaged by fire

North Bay’s Fire Chief says there were no major injuries after a basement fire in the Graniteville area of the city late Tuesday morning.

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley says crews were called to a structure fire on the 600 block of Norman Avenue just after 11:30 am.

“When crews arrived on scene they had smoke showing from the basement, first floor and coming out of the eaves.  Crews immediately went in for an interior attack,” he says.

Whiteley also says they initially couldn’t get into the basement.

“The floor has been compromised on the first floor.  Everyone was able to self-evacuate before our arrival, so three people were able to get out of the house just before we got here,” he says.

Whiteley says one person may have suffered a scratch trying to remove belongings.

He also says a basement fire is the hardest to fight because crews work above the fire, plus they were impeded by the basement windows being boarded up.

There is no word on a cause and the house is heavily damaged.

The 600 block of Norman Avenue will be closed to traffic while crews are on the scene.
