Homeless advocate promoting business plan

While the winter provides its own hardships for the city’s homeless population, so too does the summer.

Shane Moyer, a local homeless advocate, says the heat impacts them too.

“Even in the summertime it’s very difficult for them, we have a few right now from the last couple of days that have been suffering from heatstroke, a little bit of dehydration.  We have to make sure everybody stays hydrated and that nobody passes out,” he says.

Moyer is looking to gain support for a business plan he’s put together involving self-sufficient, tiny green housing units.

He says there are plenty of benefits to the plan.

“Creating jobs for our homeless, get skilled professionals to teach them these trades to help them be a bit more self-sufficient building these homes and hopefully getting back into the workforce,” he says.

Moyer is hoping to get a couple of busloads of people to go to Ottawa, gathering up ‘other tent city people’ along the way, to march and lobby for federal funding.

He says he’s also working on trying to find odd jobs for homeless people locally.

“Whether it be gardening or landscaping, if you have a job out there to give someone a fighting chance, please call us at 705-477-2646,” Moyer says.
