Nipissing student taking part in the national Girls on Boards program

A Nipissing University student is one of 36 women across Canada selected to be a young director in the Girls on Boards program.

Brittany Decaire is in the Bachelor of Social Work program at Nipissing.

The program places experienced young leaders on non-profit governance boards or committees in their communities.

Officials the program helps emerging young leaders smash one of the persisting glass ceilings: governance boards.

Decaire will receive training in governance, financials, fundraising, problem-solving and personal and team leadership.

She will also serve as a board member with a non-profit organization for at least a year.

In a release, Nipissing says Decaire is committed to making meaningful, equitable and transformational changes in society.

As an aspiring social work practitioner, she is a firm believer in working collaboratively alongside diverse populations to minimize barriers and instill opportunities for all to thrive.

Her areas of interest and expertise include mental health, forensics, substance abuse, trauma-informed care and juvenile and adult justice services.

The University also says Decaire has experience assisting vulnerable populations in her community.

She looks forward to being a part of the Girls on Boards program and building her competency in decision-making, leadership and board governance.
