Backpacks of Love campaign almost halfway to their goal

The Backpacks of Love campaign continues to work towards donating 200 backpacks of essential items to those in need locally.

The Compassionate Committee for the Homeless in North Bay says they’re nearly halfway to their goal.

Forty-five backpacks were generated after their second drop-off day, bringing the total to 90 since the campaign started.

Another drop-off day is coming up this Saturday, from 1 to 3 pm at the New Apostolic Church on Joseph Street.

They’re accepting the following new items:
– reusable water bottles
– mini first aid kits
– tarps
– socks – 3 light and 3 heavy
– small flashlights with batteries
– drawstring bags
– lip balm
– rain ponchos
– deodorant
– towelettes/wipes
– hairbrushes
– sunscreen (cream)

Forty-five backpacks were donated this week to the Indigenous Friendship Centre in North Bay.

Officials say 40 percent of the homeless locally are Indigenous.
