“Extensive” smoke damage in apartment fire

City fire fighters encountered ‘heavy smoke’ when they entered a basement apartment on the 1100 block of Clarence Street.

That from Mike Souter, Acting Platoon Chief with North Bay Fire and Emergency Services.

Fire crews were was dispatched just after 5 pm on Tuesday evening.

“Luckily it was just a pot on the stove that had gone over and actually caught the cupboards on fire a little bit and wrecked the stove, but it was out quickly,” Souter says.  “Smoke damage is extensive throughout the apartment.”

One person was taken to hospital.

“(The) ambulance just left with one of the tenants of that apartment,” Souter says.  “Just to check her out.”

He also says responding to a fire at an apartment building presents a different challenge for fire fighters.

“It’s a lot higher load of people in the building and having to evacuate everybody,” Souter says.

After extinguishing the fire, crews worked to clear the building of smoke so the tenants could get back in.

One tenant tells MyNorthBayNow.com they were allowed back in by 6 pm.
