Clean Green Beautiful North Bay (CGB) is sending out another community challenge.
This time, the committee is asking the community to raise the kindness bar with random acts of kindness.
Hariett Madigan, CGB Chair, says being either the giver or the receiver of gestures of kindness raises our physical, mental and emotional well-being, and everybody wins.
“We’ve had different acts of kindness all along since we started with our litter pickups. In our mind, that’s a random act of kindness. To go out, make your community as beautiful as you can, with just a simple act; picking up litter.”
Madigan says North Bay and the surrounding area is driven by community spirit and she knows that small acts of kindness happen every day. Now she and her committee want to share them.
“So anyone can nominate someone from their neighbourhood, who they know has gone above and beyond or even someone that’s given them a random act of kindness. Anything goes, as simple as a smile or offering a gift of food to a neighbour or mowing their lawn. It can be a very simple thing. I believe that during these COVID times… we need it even more now. We need to work together and raise the spirit of our community. That’s a gift that COVID has given us. We’re learning that there is no I, but there’s we. We’re a community and we depend on each other for our health and our well-being,” she said.
CGB is asking everyone to nominate someone from their neighbourhood that has gone above and beyond by posting a picture to the CGB Facebook group with the hashtag CleanGreenRandomActs (#CleanGreenRandomActs). The challenge will run throughout all of August.
“Our committee is going to walk our talk. We’ll be nominating folks soon and kicking it all off. CGB is a catalyst for change. […] The way we come together as human beings. That’s what it’s all about. It’s saying we can do better and put that invitation out and watch people implement it and see it manifest into a desire by people doing something palpable. ‘I love having a clean street. I love that my neighbours planted a tree.’ All these things appeal to our community. Even the littlest gesture can mean a lot,” finished Madigan.
The beautification group is in it’s third year, coming off a 2020 that saw over 8,000 trees planted, along with over 7,000 biodegradable litter bags given out.
