Canor Construction is opening a new waste recycling and processing division in North Bay.
Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing, announced $160,000 in Northern Ontario Heritage Fund money for the project on Friday.
“There are several houses that were demolished. That is all being turned into sawdust and made available for commercial sale,” Fedeli says. “That is the perfect example of diverting from the landfill site, that is tonnes of waste.”
Ken Sim, Owner and Operator of Canor Construction (pictured below), says they bring about 3,500 tonnes of waste material to the landfill each year and this will divert about 75 percent of it.
“These large emulsion machines that we purchased will grind it up into either wood pulp or a wood chip that can be sold to companies like Tembec for wood-fire mills or we can make playground mulch with it. There are all kinds of different markets we’re looking at rather than disposing of it in the landfill, it can all be recycled,” he says.
Sim says they will be hiring more people too.
“Right now we’ve hired three full-time,” he says. “When it’s at its full capacity and officially opened in 2022, and hopefully expansion from there, we’ll probably be going up to 10 full-time people with sorters, managers, equipment operators and truck drivers.”
Canor is one of seven area organizations receiving provincial funding.
Fedeli announced a total of $1.25 million for economic development and job creation projects.
The other NOHFC funding recipients include:
- $400,000 for Fabrene Inc. – a manufacturer and supplier of high-quality plastic products – to purchase new equipment.
- $200,000 for Eagle Eye Drilling Services Inc. – a drilling contractor that specializes in longhole drilling services for the underground mining sector – to purchase drills and other equipment.
- $199,950 for Eastep Family Farms – a mixed-use farming operation start-up with a focus on commercial goat farming alongside cash crops of wheat and barley – to assist with farming and machine repairs.
- 175,922 for the Finch Beach Resort – a regional retreat offering a post-COVID tourism market – to assist with the purchase of property, construction of the winterized art studio, renovation of cabins and sheds and purchase of furniture and appliances.
- $101,004 for North Bay Plastic Molders Inc. – a plastic injecting molding service – to purchase new equipment to expand the business.
- $14,400 for the Municipality of East Ferris – this funding will assist with the Phase 1 planning process of the East Ferris Industrial Park.
