Outdoor hoops to open downtown in the spring

The new outdoor basketball courts at the Community Waterfront Park in Downtown North Bay are almost complete.

That from Councillor Johanne Brousseau, Chair of the Community Services Committee.

“The final surfacing will be applied in the spring, then they will be ready for the community to use them,” she says. “It is a one and a half basketball court so a full game of basketball then a three-on-three game can be played on the half-court.”

The courts are located behind municipal parking lot 10, which is behind the North Bay Transit Terminal.

Brousseau says they’re also working on setting up the skateboard park in the same area.

“We met with a community advocate and we will now be going to service clubs to conduct a fundraiser,” she says. “Council (during) the last budget determined they wanted $100,000 raised from the community and the city would pay the remainder.”

Brousseau says they’re hoping to have more direction on where the project is headed by the end of November or early December.

She says the facility will be a permanent fixture.

“We will consult with the community on the design and move from there to a Request For Proposal (RFP) process and hopefully award the contract.  We’re hoping to start construction in 2022,” Brousseau says.

She also says staff are starting to look at other projects for the future as part of the Parks Master Plan, by costing them and putting priority on the projects that the community wants first.
