Trans Canada makes case for oil pipeline

Trans Canada is getting more support to convert a natural gas pipeline to feed unrefined oil from Alberta to refineries in Eastern Canada.  Spokesman Stefan Baranski says First Nations, unions, as well both the Ontario and Canadian chambers of commerce support the project.

Baranski made the comment at a meeting of the North Bay chamber of commerce.  One contentious point for some North Bay residents is the pipeline’s proximity to Trout Lake, the city’s drinking water.

But Baranski says at its closest point, the pipeline is still more than two miles from Trout Lake.  And Baranski says Trans Canada is taking extra precautions to protect the lake by installing four additional shut off values on the stretch of pipeline that straddles Trout Lake.

Trans Canada also has new technology that allows units to travel through the pipeline looking for micro fractures and replacing these sections before they rupture.    Baranski says it’s far safer to ship the oil through a pipeline than to haul it by rail and risk a derailment that spills its load.
