U-Haul says North Bay continues to grow

For a second straight year, North Bay is the top U-Haul growth city in Canada.

The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) moving company’s annual migration list shows arriving customers accounted for over 52 percent of all one-way U-Haul truck traffic in North Bay in 2021.

The report says the number of DIY movers coming to the city was up 40 percent, year-over-year.

Departures were up by 27 percent.

A city staff report that will be discussed at next week’s committee meeting of council actually details some of the growth seen in North Bay.

The report says as of October 31st, 2021, the Growth Community Improvement Plan, which was approved in 2019, has seen 35 approved applications throughout the four target areas.

Those include Downtown, Housing, Industrial and Waterfront.

“The total private sector investment is approximately $97 million compared to approximately $1.2 million coming from the city,” states the report. ”There will be approximately 213 jobs and 251 residential units becoming available.”

The U-Haul Canadian Growth Cities top 25 list includes 14 Ontario communities.

Greater Sudbury is third, up three spots from the previous year, while Sault Ste. Marie is 12th.
