Ottawa man facing slew of charges in North Bay

The North Bay Police Service has laid nine charges against a 28-year-old Ottawa man including impaired, fleeing from and assaulting police.

It’s alleged that just before 7 pm Saturday (Feb. 12), witnesses called police about a suspected impaired driver at a grocery store on Lakeshore Drive.

Police say when officers arrived, the person sped away and struck three vehicles and a mailbox on Marshall Avenue before being located on Booth Road.

After following the driver back to Lakeshore, police say spike belts were deployed twice.

They say the first one was avoided while the second one was successful, however, an officer narrowly avoided being struck.

Despite the damage to the tires, it’s alleged the driver continued onto Pinewood Park Drive and into oncoming traffic before getting stuck in a snowbank near Cranberry Road.

Police say officers surrounded the vehicle, which also struck a police cruiser before officers were allegedly assaulted and the accused was taken into custody.

According to police both the accused and the officers sustained minor injuries.

The accused is in custody pending a bail hearing at the North Bay Courthouse.

City police are thanking the Ontario Provincial Police for their assistance during the incident.
