Person in hospital with serious injuries after Chippewa Street West fire

A person is in the hospital with serious injuries after firefighters carried him out of a burning basement apartment.

Shortly after 11 pm on Monday, fire crews from all three stations responded to a structure fire at a triplex at 241 Chippewa Street West.

Deputy Chief Greg Saunders says on arrival, fire crews entered the basement unit where the main body of the fire was located and performed a search.

Saunders says the resident was found, carried out to safety and immediately transported to the North Bay Regional Health Centre by paramedics who had also responded to the call, adding the man has suffered ‘very serious injuries’.

Saunders adds a mother and young child from another unit were also transported to hospital but are expected to be fine, and an investigator from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is on scene now and working with an investigator from North Bay Fire to determine the cause of the fire.

Saunders says North Bay has experienced a significant uptick in the number of fires recently, and the North Bay Firefighters are again requesting that you take a moment to ensure that your smoke and CO alarms are working properly.

He adds alarms that are more than 10 years old need to be replaced and properly located, properly maintained smoke alarms will save your life.
