Residents can help grow the city’s tree canopy

If you’re looking to add some shade to your yard a new program in North Bay can help.

The “Grow Our Canopy” program involves residents purchasing trees for their property, while helping grow the city’s tree canopy.

Trees for Nipissing and the city have teamed up to make 100 trees available at $15 each to qualified residential property owners.

“There are some neighbourhoods that have hardly any shade,” says Trees for Nipissing Chair Peggy Walsh Craig.  “We thought for a long time that one of the most effective ways to increase our canopy would be for everyone to have a tree in their yard.”

She says a variety of trees will be available, including taller species such as oak and linden and smaller trees such as ironwood and serviceberry.

“If somebody doesn’t have a big yard it’s better if they take a smaller tree.  We’ll be sorting that out after all the applications are in,” she says.

Trees will range from three to five feet tall and will be less developed than those typically seen in garden centres.

One tree is available per property.

Pick up will be at Steve Omischl Sports Complex at 1105 Lakeshore Drive in early May.
