City police are reminding drivers to avoid fines by removing studded tires from their vehicles by the end of the month.

The North Bay Police Service says that under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, vehicles registered in northern Ontario can be equipped with studded tires between September 1 and May 31.

If studded tires are used after May 31 drivers can face a fine of $85 or $200 for commercial vehicles.

Police also say that according to Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation, studded tires are less effective on bare pavement than all-season tires.
