Mattawa residents 55 and older encouraged to get out and walk

A six-week walking campaign is underway in Mattawa.

‘Spring In Your Step’ is encouraging individuals 55 years and older to get out and walk.

Partners include the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit, the Town of Mattawa and Stay On Your Feet coalition.

“Walking is a great form of physical activity that can be done almost anywhere,” says Taylor Matson, Community Health Promoter at the Health Unit. “Minimizing inactive time throughout your day can provide health benefits. Walking can also be a great social activity to enjoy with your friends and family.”

Individuals 55 and older can join anytime between May 11, 2022, and June 22, 2022.

Along with the benefits of walking, the Health Unit says those who submit their tracking sheet (by 4:30 pm on June 24) will be added to a draw to win a grocery gift card.

Officials say an extra entry will be given to those that submit a photo of them walking to the Health Unit’s Facebook page, the Town of Mattawa’s Facebook page, or by email to [email protected].

A tracking sheet and free pedometer can be picked up at the Mattawa Information Centre.

The Health Unit says for extra socialization, participants can join Mattawa’s Walking Group (call 705-744-0222 for more information) or enjoy getting out for walks with family and friends.
