Stock room fire causes extensive damage to Larry’s Chip Stand

The investigation continues into a fire Saturday night at what West Nipissing’s Fire Chief calls a Sturgeon Falls ‘legacy’.

Chief Richard Miranda says 18 firefighters responded to Larry’s Chip Stand at about nine o’clock and encountered heavy fire when they entered the building.

“They knocked it down pretty quickly.  Unfortunately, there has been extensive damage within the building,” he says. “It’s ironic that there’s hardly any damage to the exterior of the building but inside the building, it’s a complete gut job.”

He says it was a hot fire too.

“The fire started in the stock room area,” he says.  “There’s an awful lot of combustibles in that room.  Everything is in cardboard boxes, there’s a lot of paper, there are oil jugs and lard boxes.”

There were no injuries and there are no specifics on a damage estimate, but Miranda says the chip stand will be closed for a while.

He says depending on how long it takes to get renovations started, it could be back open in late June or early July.
