Looking to break a record at Armed Forces Day

Organizers are hoping the 10th in-person Armed Forces Day in North Bay will be a record-breaker.

Honorary Colonel Jake Lacourse says 3,942 people formed a giant maple leaf in Trenton in 2019.

He says they’re looking to break that record at the June 22 event at the North Bay Waterfront, noting they already have 3,200 students scheduled to attend.

“We really need about a thousand people from the community to show up,” he says. “Just as we’re singing Oh Canada! That’s when we’ll move into that maple leaf configuration, we’ll get a nice aerial shot and hopefully break some records.”

Col. Richard Jolette, Base Commander at 22 Wing CFB North Bay, says it was difficult not being able to hold an in-person event over the past two years because of the pandemic.

“We had to abide with the local public health guidance,” he says. “Now this year when we’re able to do in-person again, it’s bigger than ever and the tenth anniversary.  We’re able to get all the things that we had in previous years like the Skyhawks, the Snowbirds and maybe some little extra things.”

Col. Jolette explains that Honorary Colonel Peter Chirico was at the honourary colonels’ conference last week in Winnipeg.

“He was able to speak with the Commander of the Air Force and, who knows, maybe we’ll get something a little bit extra this year that’s not on the menu,” he says.

There aren’t any details, yet, on what that may be.

On top of the Snowbirds Air Demonstration team and the Skyhawks parachute team, there will be military static displays and more.

Armed Forces Day goes from 10 am to 3 pm on June 22 and is all about showing support for the Canadian and American military personnel at 22 Wing CFB North Bay.
