Homeless Night Challenge raises over $75,000

The weather may not have cooperated fully, but plenty of money was raised during Hope Awaits’ Homeless Night Challenge.

Nicole Millage, Executive Director, says they had a good turnout for last weekend’s event.

“We raised a lot of money. We actually raised over $75,000 that day so it was a fantastic day,” she says.

The event featured a shelter building contest, live music, a silent auction, food and more.

Millage also says the weather really just displayed the realities that the homeless population faces.

“The homeless are out in the weather no matter what it is,” she says. “Whether it’s rain or shine, windy, cold, hot or whatever the weather is they’re outside so it kind of gave us a good picture of being outside no matter what.”

Funds raised from the event are going towards running the shelter and providing a safe place for the homeless men in the community.

“Our ultimate goal is to raise enough that our facility can be open longer hours,” she says. “Right now we’re only able to be open evenings and overnight.  Our dream is to be open 24 hours to offer the men at our facility more programs, more help and more services.”

The goal was $100,000 and Millage says donations are still being accepted.

They can be dropped off at Hope Awaits Men’s Homeless Shelter at 390 First Avenue East, donate online at www.hopeawaitsministries.com or donate via e-transfer to [email protected]
