Host families needed for Japanese international students

A group of international high school students from Wakaba, Japan, will be calling North Bay home for a few months this fall.

Sam Levac, a teacher at West Ferris Secondary School, says the students will be studying at West Ferris and Chippewa from Sept. 2 to Nov. 16 and they’re putting out an urgent call for host families.

“We have 19 (students) in total,” says Levac. “Twelve will attend West Ferris and seven will attend Chippewa.”

Levac says hosting a student provides families with the chance to explore new cultures and learn about global issues.

“It does put into that aspect, a student from Japan and a Canadian culture mixing together in a household, so you really get a true experience of multiculturalism at its best,” he says.

Families are also compensated for hosting a student.

“For those 75 nights families are compensated $1,700 to host a student,” says Levac. “They’re also responsible to make sure that they have transportation to the school and back and accommodate for their meals.”

He also says the students’ understanding of English varies with some coming to learn the language, too.

Anyone interested in hosting a student can contact Sam Levac at 705-498-9628 or email [email protected]
