Mattawa mayor’s race underway

Two people are running for mayor in Mattawa, so far.

Raymond Bélanger, a lifetime resident of the town, says he’s taken the time to plan a campaign that will highlight who he is, where Mattawa can go and how the town can get there.

Bélanger has worked for the town for over 30 years, holding various positions including CAO/Treasurer from 2015 to 2020.

He also served as a town councillor from 1983-85.

Bélanger says he’ll bring the business acumen and municipal experience necessary to steer Mattawa Council to making fiscally prudent decisions necessary to grow the community, improve municipal services and be aware of the tax burden on its businesses and residents.

“I want to create the conditions for our youth to be able to prosper in Mattawa, for our elders to be comfortable in their senior years,” he says.

According to the town’s website, Marie Johanne Goyette is also seeking the mayor’s chair.

The list of candidates running for office will become official on Monday, August 20.

Municipal election day is Monday, October 24.
