Mattress drop-off event goes Aug. 28

The City of North Bay is hosting a one-day recycling drop-off event for used mattresses and box springs in late August.

It will run from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on August 28 at the North Bay Public Works Yard, Seymour Street entrance (across from the Holiday Inn Express & Suites).

City residents can drop off any size of mattress or box spring for a fee of $17 per piece (cash, credit and debit accepted), which offsets the cost of the mattress recycling program.

About 20,000 mattresses have been diverted from the landfill since the start of the program, which was created after a FIRST Lego robotics team presented to council in 2016.

The students found that an estimated 100 mattresses, which are 100 percent recyclable, were going to the landfill each month.
