Annual Labour Day BBQ picnic boasts free food, kids activities

The North Bay and District Labour Council will be hosting their annual Labour Day Picnic at the North Bay Waterfront this year.

On Labour Day, Canada’s unions celebrate workers and their contributions. Here at home, unions and community leaders will gather at the waterfront at noon to celebrate working people, and highlight the issues that matter to them. That all happens on Monday, Sept. 5, from noon to 3 pm.

“Canada is in the midst of an affordability crisis and workers are the solution,” said Henri Giroux, Labour Council president. “It’s up to us to come together in solidarity and demand better from our decision-makers. Corporate greed has driven our economy for far too long. Worker power is the way forward, and it starts with strong organizing.”

According to the Labour Council, the pandemic has renewed workers’ resolve, pushing them to demand better pay, improved working conditions, and benefits. Canada’s unions are building on this momentum by encouraging workers to unionize and stand up to their employers with one strong, collective voice.

“Labour Day is an opportunity for us to be together in celebration, but also to discuss the things that matter most to workers,” said Giroux. “Community and solidarity are important to workers, and we’re happy to be able to welcome everyone to the popular picnic once again. The annual BBQ picnic is North Bay’s only Labour Day celebration. As usual, we will have free hotdogs, pop, and fun activities for families and children.”
