West Nipissing could be added to new federal Nipissing riding

Changes could be on the way to the federal riding of Nipissing-Timiskaming.

The new Nipissing federal riding would see the Municipality of West Nipissing added, with the Temiskaming Shores area, north of Temagami, moving to another riding.

Public hearings are being held, both in person and virtually, to gather comments and feedback on the proposed boundaries and electoral district names.

If the recommendations go through, northern Ontario would lose one seat in Parliament, dropping from the current ten ridings to nine.

Carol Hughes, MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing says she’ll fight the changes.

She says if the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission has its way, that riding could be absorbed into two others, the Sault Ste. Marie and Nickel Belt ridings.

The deadline to make a presentation at the public hearings is Sept. 25.

A virtual hearing involving northern Ontario is scheduled for Oct. 26.

According to the commission’s website, the proposed changes won’t come into effect until April 1, 2024, at the earliest.
