‘Light the Night’ walk takes place later this month

Local residents are being invited to ‘Light the night’ on October 22.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada says the walk is the country’s largest annual fundraising event dedicated to the blood cancer community.

“It’s usually done in big cities, but smaller cities are starting to get involved,” says spokesperson Henri Giroux. “It’s a celebration for people that have survived, honour those we have lost and give hope to those facing blood cancer.”

Having battled cancer twice, Giroux says he first heard about the walk when he was getting stem cell treatments in Ottawa.

“Once you get cancer you’re in a dark moment and this will give a little bit of light to people that do have Leukemia and Lymphoma, and there’s the potential that you can survive and I am one of the survivors,” he says.

The October 22 walk will start at 6:30 pm on Ferguson Street and goes to City Hall with guest speakers lined up.

They include Sudbury’s Dr. Sathash Gopalakrishnan who will discuss blood disorders and detecting blood cancer.
