On the campaign trail with mayoral candidate Leslie McVeety

Something needs to be done about the homeless situation in North Bay.

That from mayoral candidate Leslie McVeety when asked about a few of her priorities.

“Winter is coming and these people need a roof over their heads,” she says.  “Another one is my house was broken into by homeless people.  Maybe they just needed a place to stay, I don’t know, but make it so that doesn’t have to happen.”

McVeety says casino revenues can help.

“I would like to use the money that we’re getting from the casino to buy some tiny houses and have the homeless community move in,” she says. “Letting them live for a very minimal amount of money for rent so they can get a job, save money and be able to move out into their own place and then we can move the next batch in and start again.”

She also says seniors’ care is a priority.

“There’s no room for them in the long-term care facilities,” she says. “I would like to start a program to keep them in their homes longer by hiring Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and giving low-income seniors a reduced rate.”

McVeety says the election campaign is going well and says residents want change, noting they’ll have to get out and cast their ballot to make it happen.

Johanne Brousseau and Peter Chirico are also running for mayor.

Election Day is next Monday, Oct. 24.
