Coroners inquest slated for November in North Bay

An inquest into the death of a 43-year-old man after an interaction with North Bay police officers four years ago has been scheduled.

Gordon Dale Couvrette died in hospital on February 22, 2018.

An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act and will examine the circumstances around Couvrette’s death.

“The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths in similar circumstances,” states a release from Dr. Harry Voogjarv, Regional Supervising Coroner for North Region. “The inquest is expected to last five days and hear from approximately 10 witnesses.”

The inquest will start at 9 am on Monday, November 21, 2022, at the Best Western on Lakeshore Drive.

Dr. Steven Bodley will be the presiding officer while Jose Rodriguez and Cecilia Martin will be inquest counsel.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit announced in April 2019 that there were no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges in relation to the man’s death.
