The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) is thanking the province for creating a new winter maintenance classification for Highways 17 and 11.
The government recently created the new Ontario Trans-Canada standard, which requires bare pavement on the highways within 12 hours of a winter storm.
“FONOM would like to thank Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney and the
provincial government for making this critical change,” says FONOM President Danny

The standard for other highways in the north, with between 15-hundred and ten-thousand vehicles per day, is 16 hours.
Ontario’s NDP has been calling for an 8-hour standard.
