Winter woes in the North Bay area Thursday

There aren’t any weather advisories in effect but that’s not stopping the snow from falling and impacting buses and traffic.

School buses were cancelled in several outlying communities, including the Almaguin and West Parry Sound areas early Thursday morning, then later on in West Nipissing, Mattawa and Redbridge.

Schools remain open.

Ontario 511 reports Highway 17 east of Mattawa was reduced to one lane in the Burritts Roads area for about four hours Thursday, due to a tractor-trailer in the ditch.

Around 1 pm, another lane closure, this time near Gravelle Road on Highway 17 east of Mattawa, lasted about 20 minutes because of a transport stuck on a hill.

On Highway 17 west, traffic was moving again just after 9 am between North Bay and Sturgeon Falls.

Drivers earlier reported being stopped on the roadway for quite some time, with some reporting a collision.

Traffic was also halted for a short time around 8:30 am on Airport Hill in North Bay.

City police say a transport was stuck in the uphill lane, but thanks to North Bay public works it was able to clear the hill.

Environment Canada says 5-10 cm of snow is in the forecast for North Bay on Thursday, with periods of snow tapering off to a few flurries around midnight.
