Bruce Rodgers Memorial Ice Fishing Derby a go for 2023

Callander Legion Branch 445 is hoping you have your fishing gear ready for the upcoming Family Day Weekend.

That’s when they’ll be hosting the annual Bruce Rodgers Memorial Ice Fishing Derby.

Sherry Culling, a volunteer at the Legion who’s been a member for over 30 years, says she’s excited to get everyone together again.

“It’s a pet project that was started by my late partner in 1992,” she says. “When Bruce passed in 2016, they asked me if I wanted to take over and continue the derby in his memory. In the last couple of years, we haven’t been able to have it.”

Culling says it’s a great family activity for the weekend, and a lot of children are coming out. She says because it takes place on family day, it’s free fishing for those without a license.
“We have all kinds of prizes for children this year and prizes have started to come in for adults as well,” she says.

Those prizes include an ice auger, a Coleman stove and a pop-up fishing tent.

There are categories for both adults and children for the Pike, Pickerel and Perch caught on either Lake Nipissing or Nosbonsing.

Culling says the measuring is to be done at the Legion up until 6 pm, which is when the measuring board will be put away, and the pasta dinner will be served.

“Tickets are available at the Legion now,” says Culling. “It’s $15 a person, or $35 for a family (two adults, two children) and includes a pasta dinner.”
