Mixed results with December’s job postings

Job postings were down month-over-month in December in Nipissing, but the Labour Market Group (LMG) says there is a positive sign with the year-over-year figure.

There were 382 job postings in December.

That’s down just over 26% from November.

LMG says the decline is likely due to seasonal trends heading into the holiday season.

But, officials point out that the year-over-year figure is up

“The 2022 figure is comparable; +2.1% (+8) to the December 2021 total which is a positive sign that the possible recession signs seen from the previous few months have stalled; at least temporarily,” states the LMG Jobs Report.

Stacie Fiddler, LMG Executive Director says this remains a job seekers market.

“If anybody is out there and looking for work, the jobs are plentiful,” she says. “That hasn’t changed in many months, actually a couple of years now.  It’s just a really good time if you’re looking for work there are a lot of opportunities available out there.”

Fiddler says employers are struggling to find workers in all industry sectors.

“And not just in North Bay but across vast geographies.  As a result of an aging population a lot of folks have left the labour market for one reason or another,” she says. “We’re definitely seeing those crunches more in a small rural community than we would if we lived in a large urban centre.”

December saw 189 employers posting jobs.

Fiddler says some industries are seeing more demand too.

“Healthcare being one of them, we see that in Parry Sound and Nipissing quite often,” she says. “They have been for many years one of our top employers in terms of seeking workers but they’re struggling even more and more as folks are exiting those positions, there’s just not enough folks to fill those positions.”

The top five employers posting jobs include:
– North Bay Regional Health Centre
– Near North District School Board
– District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board
– Nipissing University
– Canadore College

Health Care & Social Assistance was the top hiring industry, followed by retail trade.

Educational services round out the top three.
